It is 1087, twenty-one years after the Battle of Hastings, and William the Conqueror is dying. On his deathbed, the aging monarch surprises all of Christendom by dividing his patrimony, leaving his eldest son, Robert Curthose, only the Duchy of Normandy, and bequeathing his hard-won throne of England to his second son, William Rufus. Curthose, enraged that his father has deprived him of the better part of his inheritance, plunges the island kingdom into war as he and his uncle, the Earl of Kent, attempt to wrest the crown from Rufus’ head.

Robert fitzHaimo, faithful companion to Rufus since the days of their childhood, is at his lord’s side as the conflict rages across the south of England. His tale is told through the eyes of a Saxon monk, the story of a turbulent era when betrayal was far more common than honour and, so it was said, the devil stole the soul of a king.

The Devil's Companion by Maureen Ash provides insight into the familial aftermath of the death of William the Conquerer. William bequeaths the English Kingdom to his son Rufus (named William), his holdings in Normandy to another son, and a purse to yet another. These are historical figures, their resulting wars documented in histories penned down through the centuries. The novel is dutifully recorded by a birth-marked monk, outcast son of a Norman father and Saxon mother. His tale is one dictated by one of Rufus' most loyal vassals, the son of a Norman sherriff. As boys, the two were sent to Normandy, the one to train to knighthood and the other to record the adventure. While there, they made powerful enemies and one yet to become a powerful friend: Rufus, future King of England, himself.

Historical fiction is one of the more palatable ways to introduce oneself to a long-ago historical era.. Customs, names, intricacies of ambitions, romances, betrayals, culture clashes, and loyalties become compelling in the woven tapestry of the story-teller.

I vacillated between three stars (OK) which offered too little praise and four stars (I like it) . I did like the book. I will probably read another by Maureen Ash. It was a pleasant and fairly compelling read. I learned more than I knew about the aftermath of the great year 1066 when the famous sire of this book's protagonists and antagonists invaded England, changing it forever, stealing it from its Saxon Kings and bequeathing it to his own, Norman, progeny. I am glad that Amazon offered Ms. Ash's collection to me at reasonable rates. I am pleased that I chose this one to read. However, The Devil's Companion is not the best of the genre (Medieval historical fiction). It is not Ellis Peters' Brother Cadfael Series, nor is it one of Mel Starr's Chronicles of Hugh Singleton, Surgeon. These, I finish with regret and immediately order a sequel. With these, I am besotted. On the other hand, "OK" is not a fair assessment. I enjoyed myself and I learned things. I liked it.

The Devil Companion edition by Maureen Ash Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I'm a huge fan of British historical fiction. I especially enjoy stories set in the 11th and 12th century. So I was enthralled by the Devil's Companion. It was well researched and expertly written. I would love to see a sequel r, better yet, a prequel.
Very enjoyable read. The beginning with the monk was a it disjoined from the rest of the story as well as the end with him. The monk serves only as the opening and closing story teller. The rest is a very good read and reasonably accurate. Readers of historical fiction will enjoy it.
I began reading this author because of my love for European history. The details that Ash uses in this story truly brought this period and the characters to life in way that makes me wish for a workable time machine.
Why..well it was enjoyable on many levels. Long enough to keep the reader interested without elaborating minor parts, plus it kept pretty true to the period which in one I enjoy reading.
This story details the life of William Rufus of England, second son of Duke William of Normandy, who became king of England after the death of his father, known as William the Conqueror. This story is told through the eyes of his close companion Robert Fitzhaimo. I found this book very interesting describing in detail life in the Norman times for both the Norman and Saxons
living at that time.
I enjoy the medieval setting of this author's mysteries, but this reads like an early work not publishable until she became well-known. The characters (one of the joys of most of her work) are not particularly interesting and it ends arbitrarily. There is much of potential interest in Williiam Rufus and his times, as both are less well-known than, say, Henry II. There might be a good book in here, but it definitely needs more work to bring out what was unique about either the king, or the protagonist (a fictional companion). Readers who are interested in, and not familiar with, how knights thought about themselves and those they served (but don't like mystery novels) might enjoy this portrayal, but the Templar mysteries are equally acurate and more interesting. I am so grateful Ash discovered Nicolaa de la Haye. .
Rather different from her previous Templar series, this is more of a history-biography and not a mystery. It reminds me of books by H A Culley such as the "Kings of Northumbria" series. If you like one, then you might like the other.
